"Don't Give The Church A Black Eye"

September 18, 2024 | By Chuck

A black eye makes me think of a playground disagreement that ends with one kid punching the other. I guess kids will be kids, but I’d like to think none of us would dare to black the eye of another person. Surely, we can talk it out. I’m positive there must be a better solution. Even in our worst anger, the thought of blacking someone’s eye with a fist to the face just does not seem Christ-like. I’m sure you agree it is not Christ-like.

So, why do some of the most well-meaning Christians give the church a black eye? You may wonder how can Christians give the church a black eye. Several years ago, a faithful, church-going Christian woman criticized a young Christian mother of two for not making her girls wear a dress to church. This well-meaning and experienced Christian never considered the financial and home circumstances of the young mother. She also never considered the negative effects her words could have on the church. When the words or actions of Christians hurt the church's image, that is giving the church a black eye.

I understand the church is a group of imperfect people, so these things will continue to happen. But I think we all need to be cognizant of our words and how they will affect others and how they will represent the church. Christians represent the church every day and in all we do. So, we must be cautious about the emails and texts we send and the comments we post on social media. How would you feel if by your words or comments on social media you turned someone away from the church? It is a heartbreaking thought and one none of us wish to be a part of. May we all speak as representatives of Christ so no one gives the church a black eye.
