"Salvation"

Last Sunday morning I received a text with this question: “Why will so many people show up at church for a promise of a little bit of free candy but won’t show up for free salvation?” This question came the morning after around 1,700 people made their way through our church building to collect candy during our annual Trunk or Treat. The question is in no way a criticism of Trunk or Treat, but rather a legitimate concern about why candy is more important than salvation. I’m not sure I have the answer, but I do believe it says a lot about our current culture and where we are as a society. Don’t misunderstand me; I like candy (sometimes too much), but salvation means everything to me. Just like the candy we passed out, salvation is God’s free gift. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 6:23)
In our modern times are we so busy that salvation has been pushed to the back burner? Is salvation that topic we think about at the end of life and only discuss at funerals? It seems the heart of the matter lies with priorities. What is most important to you and your family? Priorities are the things we seldom overlook, take for granted, or forget about because they are a priority to us. Is salvation a priority? God’s free gift of salvation should be our top priority and our ultimate focus in this life.
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Col. 3:1-2)
