"Just Enough"

April 14, 2025 | By Chuck

Have you ever tried to slide by doing just enough? Not going above and beyond, not doing anything extra, but literally doing just enough to get by. I’m a little embarrassed to admit but that sounds like my high school academic career. For me, the goal wasn’t an “A” when I could do just enough and get a “C” and still pass the class. I know, I know, that’s terrible and I shouldn’t have told you that. But, it’s true.

The thing that bothers me about this "do just enough to get by" attitude is that it will creep into our spiritual lives too. The truth is if you are okay with a mediocre performance at work, school, or home you will see that same mediocrity in your spiritual life as well. Should Christians really have the mindset of doing just enough to get to heaven? All has been done and finished at the cross for us to go to heaven. We are not working our way to heaven. But, I do believe spiritual growth and personal progress in your relationship with God should be a priority in this life. The do just enough attitude does not lend itself to a powerful prayer life, being diligent to study God’s Word on a regular basis, or being willing to step up and serve when needed.

Don’t do just enough in your spiritual life to get by. Set goals in your spiritual life that will lead to growth. Allow someone close to you to hold you accountable so you are motivated to go above and beyond. If it’s work, school, home or our daily spiritual life, may we always strive to do our very best and honor God.

“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17)
