"Maybe We Should Get Used To Different"

February 18, 2022 | By Chuck

We spend much of our lives working hard not to be different.  From the time we begin school we desperately seek a place to fit so that we won’t be different.  Why does different bother us?  Are we afraid of different?  Does different make us uncomfortable?  Does different challenge our thinking or our way of doing things?  What is wrong with different?

Jesus was different.   Jesus’ time on earth began different as He was born of a virgin.  Jesus showed He was different at the age of twelve when He was found in the temple listening to the teachers. (Lk. 2:46-47) Jesus called people who were different to follow Him and be His disciples, like Levi, an unpopular tax-collector. (Lk. 5:27-28) Throughout His ministry Jesus stood out because He did things that were different.  The healings, casting out demons, miraculously feeding thousands, His teachings and even the way He treated others all scream different.  If Jesus was different, then different isn’t bad or wrong.

Don’t forget, the One who many categorized as different is the very One we’re striving to follow and imitate today.  If we are truly faithfully following Jesus, we will be different.  Some may believe because something is different, it’s wrong.  As long as different doesn’t take us outside the boundaries of Scripture, we’re okay to practice it.  Instead of avoiding it, maybe we should get used to different.

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9).
