Pound your parent KICKBALL    –    On Sept. 23 for our devotional we are going to have a “Pound Your Parents Kickball” Game. The devotional will be at the Barker’s house. We will meet at their house at 5pm and have a church service over there.  We will go over there and take the van for those who need a ride, the van will leave church at 4:45. We will play kickball and then we will eat and then have a devo. We will get done around 7:45-8:00 and get back to the building around 8:15ish. I encourage all the parents to come out and participate.  Even if you don’t want to play kickball you can root on your fellow parents.

Halloween Party – This year for the Halloween Party we are going to do something like we did last year. We are going to take the teens and do a Haunted House or Haunted Hayride. I am going to try to find a Haunted House that is scary but at the same time is safe and Family Friendly. More details to come. If you have a suggestion let me know.

Parent Meeting –  Once or twice a year I try to meet with the parents of teens and discuss pressing issues in teen culture and how we can best deal with these issues.  This fall we will be meeting on Wednesday night, Sept 19 during class from 7:00-8:00 in the Chapel.  Subject – Right Click:  Parenting Your Teenager in a Digital Media World.  Look forward to seeing you there.

Build (1/3)

This week we’re starting a new series called BUILD.  We’ll be talking about Nehemiah and how God used him to accomplish a great work. There are some great takeaways from Nehemiah’s story…check out what’s in store this week!

Parents Try This:  Try sharing a story of what it was like growing up where you lived as a student. Was it a big city or a small town? Was there a lot to do or were you often bored? Most importantly, in what ways does your hometown shape who you are today? As you share, you may just find your student starting to value his or her own experience more exactly where they are.

Sunday Morning
Junior High – Scott Patterson
Back to School (2/3)

Peer pressure is inevitable in school.  No matter how strong you are, there are always going to be times where it is tempting to give in.  If you don’t decide now how you’re going to react to peer pressure, it’s going to be a lot harder to do the right thing when you’re trying to make that decision in the heat of the moment.

Senior High – T. J. Davidson

Denominations (2/3)
We are starting a series looking at different Denominations like Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witness. By studying what others believe it can help us to understand what we believe and why we believe it. This week we are looking at Jehovah's Witnesses.

Back to School (1/3)

We live in a generation that demands instant gratification, yet spend hours and hours on things that don’t truly matter. This can leave us with little to no time to focus on what’s import and responsibilities that actually need to get done. Learning time management isn’t only helpful with this, it’s Biblical!

TEEN EVENTS   –   I want to watch your teens in action, whether watching them in the band, debate, chorus, football, baseball, tennis, volleyball, or underwater basket weaving.  If your teen plays a sport or is in a club or some type of school activity I want to watch.  Get me a schedule of when they play or perform, or even tell me the day of event, so I can come and cheer them on.

Whose Graduating??   –   It is crazy to think about but we are already starting to make plans for our Graduation Service in May!  I need to know if your teen is graduating because I will need to send you some information in the upcoming weeks.

AGAPE GROUPS   –   I want to encourage all parents and their teens to get involved in an Agape group.  I want to stress that teens need to get involved in an Agape group and that the teens should not be used as just babysitters, but this is a great chance for the teens to get involved in the congregation as a whole.  Teens, if for some reason you can’t be in an Agape group with your parents, get involved in another Agape group, I can help you find one if you need my help.

Important Dates
9/8 – Escape Room – Leave 4pm – Back 8pm
9/19 – Parent Meeting During Class – Upstairs
9/23 – Parent Kickball – Barker House – 5-8 pm – Dinner Provided – parents bring desserts

Reach (6/6) – A Study on Psalms and Prayer

The point of the lesson was to teach your child that they are missing an awesome level of communication with God when they don’t make time to stop and thank Him for all He’s done in and through their lives.
Next Steps . . . (Parents this part is NEW)
This week your child learned how a deepening relationship with God, through a vibrant prayer life, can lead them to boldly express the joy of their relationship with God, confident and bold in their faith. Help challenge your child in this area with the following questions:

·       How does a richer communication with God lead you to more confidence in your relationship with Him?

·       Think about times when God has intervened in your life. How can we express our joy and happiness over these moments in a way that makes others want to experience them for themselves?

·       Since your study was about reaching out to God, what are some ways we can thank God for all He has done in our lives?

Next Steps . . .  (This part is new each week!!)
Next is learning to trust God in all situations of life. Here are some questions that might help you talk to your child about the word trust:

·       How has your understanding of trusting God grown since you first became a Christian?

·       Do you think God can be trusted to help you in day-to-day situations? How do your actions either back this belief up, or undermine it?

·       What stands in the way of being able to trust God to help you in all areas of your life?

Next Steps . . .

Maybe you could recall some “God moments” in your life. Hindsight is crystal clear. And looking back, maybe you can recall some instances where you could positively identify God’s intervention in some way. Consider sharing this with your child. Then, consider asking these or similar questions to engage your child in a conversation based on this concept:

·       Why is it sometimes hard to see what God is doing in our day-to-day life?

·       How does God’s working in our past give us confidence in the present, and hope for the future?

·       Is there a moment you can look to where you can absolutely say that was God working? Describe it. (Share your perspective of that moment, as well.) What did you learn about God from this moment? What did you learn about yourself or our family?

Wednesday Night – T. J. Davidson

Christian Art Reflection.  We are going to be discussing what it means to have a relationship with God.  Many times we think we have to work for God or under God or from God when really it's all about living in communion with God.

Sunday Morning  – T. J. Davidson
Reach – A Study of Psalms (2/6)

Study Overview – You don’t need to be told that you and your teenager live in a fast-paced world. With the pace of life, it’s often difficult finding time to talk. Over the next 6 weeks we will study the book of Psalms.  As we study Psalms we will be learning some important truths:

– God created us to reach out to Him in real and powerful communication
– God is worthy of our praising Him simply for who his is
– When we communicate with God we can be completely honest, holding nothing back

Next Steps . . .  (This part is for you parents – THIS PART CHANGES EVERY WEEK!!)

Consider asking the following questions, or similar ones, to engage your child in conversation:

·       When you really think about God, who and what He is, how does it make you feel? How does it feel knowing that we can actually have a dialogue with Him?

·       Here’s an interesting question: Do you see people around you at school choose their friends based on what they can do, instead of who they are? Do you see a parallel there with how we sometimes treat our relationship with God?

During the next week as you have time to talk with your child, you may find these questions helpful in opening up some dialogue about the Bible study from the Book of Psalms. Consider asking the following questions:

·       Do you ever think about the times you and I talk as similar to what it is like to talk with God? How are they similar? How are they different?

·       Share some things that interfere with your own personal communication with God. Then, ask your child if he or she struggles in any of the same areas. Ask something like: Can we help each other brainstorm some ways to minimize these struggles in our lives?

·       If you could ask God any question what would that question be? Are there questions you feel like you can’t ask God?
