News and Notes
Back to School mini-retreat   –   In the past we have done back to school lock-ins and back to school day trips.  This year we wanted to try something different.  We thought a mini-retreat would be a great way to start off the school year.  Short trip, leave Friday evening get back Saturday before dinner.  We will use the time to hang out, play some games, and have a couple of lessons.

Safe Talk   –   During the three-hour safeTALK training, participants will learn how to respond to individuals who have made suicidal statements and help connect them with appropriate resources. Participants will also learn to recognize the invitations for help that some individuals make and are often overlooked by learning to apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe.  SafeTALK sessions are being planned for Sept 9 and Sept 23 from 1:00-4:15

Important Dates
8/8 – DUE:  Back to School Mini-Retreat – $10
8/19 – Back to School Bash – Highway CoC –
        5:55 leave building  –  Back 8:45
8/24-25 – Back to School Mini-Retreat – info sheets at Welcome Center
9/8 – Escape Room
9/19 – Parent Meeting During Class
9/23 – Parent Kickball – Barker House – 5-8 pm – Dinner Provided

Wednesday Night
Friendship With God (2/4)  Study of 1 John
We are starting a new series over the next 4 weeks on the book of 1 John.  This week we are looking at 1 John 2:12-27

Sunday Morning

Reach (5/6) – A Study on Psalms and Prayer

The point of the lesson was to teach your child that they are missing an awesome level of communication with God when they don’t make time to stop and thank Him for all He’s done in and through their lives.

Next Steps . . .  (This part is new each week!!)
Next is learning to trust God in all situations of life. Here are some questions that might help you talk to your child about the word trust:

·       How has your understanding of trusting God grown since you first became a Christian?

·       Do you think God can be trusted to help you in day-to-day situations? How do your actions either back this belief up, or undermine it?

·       What stands in the way of being able to trust God to help you in all areas of your life?

We are starting a new series over the next 4 weeks on the book of 1 John.  This week we are looking at 1 John 1:1-2:15.

Reach (4/6) – A Study on Psalms and Prayer
The point of the lesson was to teach your child that they are missing an awesome level of communication with God when they don’t make time to stop and thank Him for all He’s done in and through their lives.

Next Steps . . .

Maybe you could recall some “God moments” in your life. Hindsight is crystal clear. And looking back, maybe you can recall some instances where you could positively identify God’s intervention in some way. Consider sharing this with your child. Then, consider asking these or similar questions to engage your child in a conversation based on this concept:

·       Why is it sometimes hard to see what God is doing in our day-to-day life?

·       How does God’s working in our past give us confidence in the present, and hope for the future?

·       Is there a moment you can look to where you can absolutely say that was God working? Describe it. (Share your perspective of that moment, as well.) What did you learn about God from this moment? What did you learn about yourself or our family?

Wednesday Night – T. J. Davidson

Christian Art Reflection.  We are going to be discussing what it means to have a relationship with God.  Many times we think we have to work for God or under God or from God when really it's all about living in communion with God.

Sunday Morning  – T. J. Davidson
Reach – A Study of Psalms (2/6)

Study Overview – You don’t need to be told that you and your teenager live in a fast-paced world. With the pace of life, it’s often difficult finding time to talk. Over the next 6 weeks we will study the book of Psalms.  As we study Psalms we will be learning some important truths:

– God created us to reach out to Him in real and powerful communication
– God is worthy of our praising Him simply for who his is
– When we communicate with God we can be completely honest, holding nothing back

Next Steps . . .  (This part is for you parents – THIS PART CHANGES EVERY WEEK!!)

Consider asking the following questions, or similar ones, to engage your child in conversation:

·       When you really think about God, who and what He is, how does it make you feel? How does it feel knowing that we can actually have a dialogue with Him?

·       Here’s an interesting question: Do you see people around you at school choose their friends based on what they can do, instead of who they are? Do you see a parallel there with how we sometimes treat our relationship with God?

Next Steps . . .  (This part is for you parents!!)
During the next week as you have time to talk with your child, you may find these questions helpful in opening up some dialogue about the Bible study from the Book of Psalms. Consider asking the following questions:

·       Do you ever think about the times you and I talk as similar to what it is like to talk with God? How are they similar? How are they different?

·       Share some things that interfere with your own personal communication with God. Then, ask your child if he or she struggles in any of the same areas. Ask something like: Can we help each other brainstorm some ways to minimize these struggles in our lives?

·       If you could ask God any question what would that question be? Are there questions you feel like you can’t ask God?

No Limits (2/3)

We’re in week two of No Limits and will be focusing on Moses again this week. Moses had real doubts about himself as a person – something almost everyone will struggle with sometime in life. What better time than the teenage years to talk about the necessity of dependence on God? As you approach this week with your students, think about one time in your life when God, not yourself, proved to be the difference. Have a great week!

Sunday Morning –
Modesty – Rob Gerst (3/3)
With summer coming up Rob is going to talk about modesty for the next 3 weeks.  He’s going to be covering:  God’s attitude toward sex and lust vs. desire.  How Jesus dealt with sexual sinners and spend some time answering questions.
