Wednesday Night

The Journey (3/3)

Finishing our series on The Journey and what it looks like to the road to discipleship.  This week we are looking at John the Apostle.  He was first known as a Son of Thunder who wanted to call down fire form heaven and kill those who did not accept Jesus.  Later in his life Jesus has softened his heart and was known as the Apostle of Love.  It is easy for us to get mad and frustrated.  We live in a society that is all about getting “triggered” for what is happening.  However the way of Jesus teachers us to let go of anger and embrace love and forgiveness.

Sunday Morning
Sermon on the Mount – T. J. Davidson (6/6)

We are finishing our series on the Sermon on the Mount and we are looking at what Jesus has to say about the narrow way in Matthew 7:13-29.  We live in a society that wants to accept everyone and everything and not judge anyone’s beliefs.  Our study should start a great conversation about these two opposing world views.

WEEKLY EMAIL NEWSLETTER   –   Every week I send out an email that has attachments for upcoming trips, dates and info about upcoming events.  I also include descriptions of what I am teaching on Sunday and Wednesday.  I hope you will take time to put events in your calendar.  I also hope that you will follow up with your teen about what we are teaching in class.  When you ask questions it can start great conversations and it reinforces the message.  Also, research shows that just asking tons of questions is not the most effective, but have a conversation and tell them what you have been learning also!  If you are not on my email list or have not been reading them, I encourage you to do so.

Upcoming Events
GETTING TEENS IN THE WORD   –   At the beginning of this year I really want to focus on getting teens to spend a little time every day in God’s word.  If they do that I know it can help transform their life!!  I am starting a series this Wednesday about Resolutions and are encouraging teens to form healthy spiritual habits.  There are 2 ways we are promoting this and we hope that you help us and encourage your teen to participate!
          We are doing this by trying to reach teens where they are.  1) I have bought a book called “One Minute Bible for Starters.”  The book is broken up into 90 days.  Each day has a short Bible reading and devotional.  Each reading is short so it is manageable and if teens can do it for 3 months, then they have started an amazing habit!  2)  I have also started putting passages of Scripture with very short devotional thoughts on Instagram.  I post these several times a week when teens are getting ready for school.  The youth instagram name is “cabotcocyg”. Encourage your teens to participate in one or both of these great opportunities!

Teen Leaders Conference   –   TLC is a weekend retreat in Branson, MO for 9th-12 graders who see themselves as leaders in the youth group, or who want to be leaders in the youth group.  The retreat will be January 19-21 and the cost is $35 ($100 value).  This is a time where we get together with the leaders from the youth groups of the Searcy churches and have time to sing, pray, study God’s word, and have fun.  Info packs and how to sign up at Welcome Center.  Have to sign up and pay by Dec. 2.

BIBLE STUDY WITH YOUR TEEN   –   If your teen is thinking about getting baptized or has already been baptized, I have a set of 2 Bible studies that I would love to do with your teen.  It gives us a chance to study God’s word together and look at some important biblical subjects.  It also gives me a chance to spend some one on one time with them and get to know your teen better.  Let me know if you are interested, I am very flexible on when we can do the Bible studies.  You can also find these Bible studies at the Phase Station by the Welcome Center.

Bible 101 (3/3)

We are starting a new series called “Bible 101” and it is about some of the Great Themes of Scripture.  Although I call it Bible 101 it is anything but basic.  Every year we are going to look at a few different themes that are prevalent throughout Scripture.  I believe this will help us to see how the Bible is a unified whole and when we understand some of the Big Themes of Scriptures it helps make the whole thing make sense.

This week we are looking at “Sacrifice and Atonement.”  As we talked about last week God is holy.  Because God is completely perfect in his moral perfection, he also can’t stand sin.  The ideas of sacrifice and atonement are God’s ways to bring us back to God.  Here is a great video that illustrates this theme.
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_OlRWGLdnw&t>

 Questions you can ask:
– Why do you think Jesus had to die for us?
– What are some ways we can make sacrifices to God today?
